If you’re planning a trip to Jammu and Kashmir to experience the magical snowfall, it’s advisable to delay your plans, as per the travel advisory issued by local authorities.

Whether you are travelling by train, flight, or going on a road trip to Kashmir, it is essential to research the current situation thoroughly to make an informed decision.

Heavy snowfall causes disruptions in Kashmir; avalanche alert issued

Most parts of Kashmir, including the crowd-favourite Gulmarg, recently experienced snowfall after a dry spell lasting two months. However, continuous snowfall has resulted in road closures as well as train and flight cancellations at present.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an avalanche warning on February 4, advising locals and tourists to refrain from visiting the affected areas, as reported by Mint.

Recent reports indicate that the Jammu-Srinagar highway faced temporary closure due to a landslide in the Ramban district on February 4, 2024, leading to travel disruptions and cancellations. Indigo and other airlines have also experienced flight cancellations due to unpredictable weather conditions. Earlier in the day, several train services were also cancelled.

Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police have issued travel advisories for bikers and motorists to avoid hilly roads due to challenging weather conditions. According to a report by ETV Bharat, traffic officials have urged commuters to exercise caution, noting slippery roads and single-lane conditions on specific routes along the Jammu-Srinagar route.

While the danger level has been categorised as “medium” by authorities, the weather is expected to clear by February 11, according to the forecast, allowing tourists to enjoy the beauty of Kashmir.
