Starz has revealed the premiere date, key art and official trailer for its limited series Mary & George, which is an adaptation of Benjamin Wooley’s 2017 nonfiction book The King’s Assassin

The 17th century period drama consists of seven episodes and is slated to make its debut on April 5 at 9 p.m., with episodes available to watch on the network’s streaming platform at midnight. Julianne Moore stars as Lady Mary Villers, the Countess of Buckingham, who encourages her son George (Red, White & Royal Blue‘s Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran), leading to a fatal attraction.

Set to a baroque version of The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” the trailer features the countess explaining her motives behind seeking power through her son’s liaison: “I do not own my home. My children are unwed. We have nothing.” When she is told that if this became known, her position in society will become “untenable,” she urges her son to give “cock-struck” King James I “whatever he wants.” Meanwhile, the countess has her own string of steamy affairs with women.

The series is created and written by D.C. Moore (Killing Eve) who also serves as executive producer alongside Liza Marshall, Oliver Hermanus (who additionally worked as lead director) and Moore. Mary & George was originally set to air on AMC but was acquired by Starz in November.
