LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — If you’re planning to travel to Jamaica or the Bahamas, you may want to reconsider.

The U.S. State Department has issued a level two travel advisory in the Bahamas. That means travelers should take extra caution.

There have been 18 murders in Nassau since the beginning of the year, according to the U.S. Embassy there.

“Generally, if you stay in all-inclusive (hotels), you’re in a pretty safe environment,” said Steve Glenn, chairman of Lincoln-based Executive Travel. “However, if you go out beyond that, you got to be very, very cautious. You should go out in groups and maintain a high level of vigilance.”

A level three advisory has been issued for Jamaica because of crime and health concerns.

That means travelers are urged to reconsider going there.

But in a letter to travel agencies, the Jamaica Tourism Board said the island is safe four tourists.

The board said that the travel advisory was reduced from level four and that the crime rate against tourists is 0.01%.

Some college students in Lincoln who are planning their spring breaks said they will consider these advisories when choosing where to go.

“I would definitely take it into consideration and probably find something different to do,” Connor Carpenter said.

But others said it’s not a big deal.

“I feel like if I stay in the tourism areas, I’ll be somehow safe,” Jasmine Underwood said.
