The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently announced that the current weather patterns, characterized by dense fog and cold wave conditions, are expected to persist in northeast India for the upcoming five days. This led to the cancellation of trains and flights.

This thick blanket of fog that descended on Thursday has been particularly descended in the northern and northeastern parts of the country, severely reducing visibility to almost zero in several places. This has had a substantial impact on transportation, disrupting both air and rail services significantly.

The areas most affected by this dense to very dense fog include key regions such as Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, and Odisha. The IMD’s forecast suggests that these conditions are not fleeting but are expected to maintain their grip on these regions for the next five days. The department also warned of cold wave to severe cold wave conditions continuing to affect northwest India during this period.

The adverse weather has had a tangible impact on railway operations, with 18 trains scheduled to arrive in Delhi experiencing significant delays. These delays, amounting to as much as six hours, were attributed to the heavy fog that has shrouded the railway tracks, according to a statement from an India Railways spokesperson.

Air travel has not been spared, either. At the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi, the Palam Observatory reported visibility levels plummeting to a mere 50 meters. Such low-visibility conditions require specific protocols for aircraft takeoff and landing. Only runways that are compliant with CAT III-B standards are equipped to handle aircraft operations under such conditions, posing a challenge for flight scheduling.

Consequently, several flights at the IGI Airport faced delays. Passengers found themselves stranded at the airport, waiting for extended periods as their flights were postponed beyond their scheduled departure times. This situation has caused inconvenience and disruption for travelers, highlighting the significant impact of adverse weather conditions on modern transportation systems.

The continued forecast of dense fog and cold wave conditions poses ongoing challenges for both ground and air transport in the affected regions. The IMD’s prediction underscores the need for preparedness and caution in these areas over the next few days as citizens and authorities alike navigate the complexities of travel and daily activities under these difficult weather conditions.
